Start of a research project for Linpor Deammonification at the WWTP Korneuburg

We are truly glad to announce the start of the research project “Large-Scale implementation of a side-stream deammonification with Linpor® biocarriers” at the Korneuburg Wastewater Treatment plant with cooperation of Research Unit Water Quality Management of TU Wien.

The purpose of this study is to implement a full-scale sidestream deammonification with Linpor® carriers and to ensure a high sludge age for the accumulation of anammox bacteria by using carriers, especially in the start-up phase.

The goal is a separate treatment of nitrogen-rich filtrate resulting from dewatering of anaerobically stabilized sludge in a pilot moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). In this MBBR solution, an aerobic and an anoxic process are combined in one reactor, using both conventional nitrite-producing bacteria and an anammox biomass, without the need to add an expensive external carbon source. This results in a significant reduction of the nutrient in return loads thus relieving the main treatment process.

We thank the management and personnel of the wastewater treatment plant Korneuburg and Institute of Water Quality and Resource Management of TU Wien for their support and cooperation.
